the box is being removed, so took some pictures before that was out.. I've already removed a considerable spread of its overgrown branches. likely some will sprout from the remaining roots.
the tree
twisted hazel.. and strangely the greenhouse has solid sides...
minus a veggy bed in the foreground.. allowed to grow over.. and only one cold frame
constrained by trying to save the azalea behind and the bricks at the front
I resorted to cutting the roots as I found them with secatuers
and its out
massive spider in the greenhouse
dug out.. put back in ... see if we can grow legs and christmas baubles..

2019. and here we go again...........
todays picture of ''the tree'' , quite some difference in height. it was planted around 2005.
for just now I am back living in my flat. the garden is good though overgrown and the soil has no ''life'' and needs attention.
time will see what happens.

carry on gardening...
photos sent to me by the letting agents , as the tenants have now left the property. they have, thankfully, left the garden very tidy.
three veg plots look ok and ready to be used... there used to be another veg plot in front of the post.. and there were two coldframes.. so some changes here and there.
the trampoline will likely be gone by the time I get into it, the shrubs are a bit overgrown. and the tree looks huge now.. it'll be lovely with its leaves on.
I have access from the end of March. inside will need carpets cleaned or replaced, the walls a lick of paint... well that's all they'll get.. lol... and outside will be a project for cutting back and reassessing whats there.. stuff might come up.. likely a lot of the smaller plants have gone. there may be surprises !!
its difficult to think of plans as it might get sold quickly.. it might not.. so I'll just do 'what and when' as I have time for it.
there are notifications popping up about changes to blogger.. to do with google... and widgets and platforms and links.. none of which I understand.. so I've no idea what to expect. I hope the whole thing doesn't dissapear into the ether....

5 Tips to Keep Your Garden Pond Clean, guest post by Katie Michaels
5 Tips to Keep Your Garden Pond Clean
Having a garden pond is an exciting new venture for many but
when the water starts to turn green and you can’t see a thing, it’s not a good
sight for you and it’s definitely not good news for your fish so how exactly do
you keep your garden pond clean?
There are several things to consider when it comes to
keeping the pond water clean and avoiding it turning into a green and smelly
swamp, from the plants you add to the pond, through to how much you are feeding
your fish.
With so many elements affecting your pond water it can feel
overwhelming but here are five key things you need to think about if you want
to maintain a clean garden pond and a pleasant healthy environment for your
fish to live in:
1. Don’t have too many fish
While it might be tempting to fill your pond with beautiful
colourful fish you need to make sure you don’t over fill the pond. Fish produce
waste products which pollute the water and they also breed, so if you have too
many fish your pond will very quickly become an unpleasant environment.
Keep an eye on your fish population and if they do breed you
might be able to sell the young to fish stockists to help keep the population
under control. Alternatively make sure all your fish are the same sex to avoid
any growth in the population.
The other factor when it comes to fish is removing sick or
dead fish from the pond as quickly as possible so that you don’t end up with a
polluted pond that way either. It’s best to check your fish weekly for signs of
any problems.
2. Don’t feed the fish too much
This is one of the most common problems with new fish owners
– the temptation to continuously feed fish when they don’t need it. Fish will
only eat what they need so any unwanted food will just fall to the bottom of
your pond.
Waste food will then start to rot, polluting the water and
causing problems in your pond so don’t over feed, and always remove any
leftover food which the fish don’t eat, straight away, otherwise your pond
water quality will go downhill rapidly.
3. Don’t smother your pond with too many
plants
Water plants take in oxygen so make sure you don’t allow
your pond to become over grown as the plants will end up causing oxygen levels
to drop in the water. Too many plants will also result in a lack of light and
sun in the pond due to the coverage of the leaves, which again can have a
negative impact.
Make sure you regularly trim back plants and clear fallen
leaves and dead plants from the water to help keep the quality high. Avoid
plants which have a tendency to grow across the water surface and cover it.
4. Make sure your water pump and filters are
working properly
Managing and maintaining your pond equipment
is key to keeping it clean. The water pump for your pond is the key to making
sure your water is being circulated regularly so you need to make sure it is
well maintained and fully functioning at all times. It’s important to have a
pump which is big enough for the size of pond you have otherwise it won’t cope.
You should check your pump regularly to make sure it is not
clogged with debris and to make sure all the parts are working effectively – if
you notice any wear and tear make sure you replace the parts straight away to
keep it running well.
You should also make sure your filter system is the right
size for your particular pond and make sure it is working effectively. Change
and clean your filters regularly to ensure they don’t get clogged with debris
and dirt.
5. Always clear debris from the pond surface
Ponds tend to attract all kinds of debris from dead leaves
falling from nearby trees, to rubbish items blown in on the wind or even
dropped by birds so always make sure you clear debris daily from your pond
surface, before it has a chance to sink to the bottom and start to rot and
pollute your water.
If you can, use netting to cover the pond to help catch any
falling debris so that it never reaches the water in the first place – this
will go a long way to helping to keep your garden pond clean and your water
sparkling and healthy for all your fish.
These five tips will go a long way to ensuring that your
pond remains a clean environment for all the family to enjoy all year round and
by following simple regular maintenance outlined here, you should never be left
with any huge pond cleaning issues.

I cleaned. I have to say I never snooped, not interested.
but I'm totally with the 'not bigger than you can clean yourself' . that would be 40 minutes worth. so its small for me.
and as I'm of mostly 'no fixed abode', thats still a dream

car update
I did manage to sell the little Corsa the first weekend in December. very glad about that.. this Vectra is 17 yrs old .. its now developed a slight fuel problem and bunny hops as you drive... eeeek... coming up to Christmas week means there's no chance of getting it fixed till early January.
it was really bad on Sunday though I managed to get it to the farm and call out the AA rescue service who changed the spark plugs, its better but not cured. its also been to a local garage but no time to get it fixed.
''luckily'' (??) I have driven old bangers most of my life so babying the car past a bit of bunnyhopping is almost second nature.. I know people who call out the rescue services for less... haha...

I'm not a salesperson
to update on ''car overload'' .. https://clairesgarden.blogspot.com/2018/09/car-overload.html
I am still a two car owner. I advertised the larger one and only got two offers to swap it for equally large , expensive to run, other cars.. now if I have to keep a big car at least I know whats been fixed and what hasn't on this one.
the smaller car was advertised and drew a phone call, a text message or an email .. approximately every five minutes for a week. even at 3am..... two people did look at it when I offered to take the car to them... but never called back after ''thinking about it'' and lots of other people engage in furious messaging sessions.. never actually call to talk. arrange to look at it and DONT' TURN UP.
I have removed advert . I'll put it back up later this week and specify to view on Saturday morning only.....

''rain rain go away...'' reposted from 7 years ago.
I love the uspside down reflections in the drops. This post was made on the 13th August 2011. Seven years ago but seems longer. I no longer have the garden or a good camera to record things with. I'm sitting inside with my view of chimney pots on the roof of the nextdoor house and looking at the rain. Very heavy rain yesterday and today , so nothing going on to post about . Enjoy old memories, glad I have them to look back on.

sunny summer
having a great lead horse is so important in training others. I
appreciate everyone who has taken the time to help me. Quince did not
leave the farm environment till she was 9 and then spent two years in a
quiet out of town place though she did get used to cars and bikes
there. for the last six months she has had to get used to going past
houses and people, and all the mad things they do. scaffolding to re
-roof, cutting grass and hedges, washing cars, putting up new fences
and just as she gets used to that they paint it a different colour. a
childrens play park and the children who run screaming to see a horse.
.... just beyond the houses we have lovely off road paths to wander,
only a few miles but I love it.
on the subject of houses... I am still camping in my daughters spare room. I sorted through some boxes this week that have been packed in a hurry in various places over the years. there was a few surprises in there. I got from six boxes down to four, a bag of stuff for the charity shop and some stuff to sell on ebay. and a few good finds to use, some t-shirts and a waterproof jacket. I need those.
I'm not feeling too great today. I came home from work early last night not feeling well. either sun-stroke , food poisoning or a combination of them both. I left Quince to cool down before getting a feed.. myself? I was rushed into the farmhouse and given a wonderful lunch containing a lot of mayonnaise , eggs, cream , fruit.... I usually don't eat that much during the day particularly before going to work as I have heavy duties to do.
and my work has a policy that if you have been ill you cannot have an extra shift. so I am not allowed to work the shift that was an extra today.. that leaves them short staffed and me short of money.

reposting from 12 years ago.. 12 !! ''Sunday morning''
this little black viola has self seeded. these are meant to be edible but its too pretty to pick.
Cerinthe major purpurescens, grown from seed.. I am sure I planted seeds for a yellow one as well but they have not appeared yet.
sweet pea 'Borderline' , lovely colour and good scent too. there's no point in haveing them unless they're good and smelly!
this is a funny plant, Parahebe perfoliata, common name - diggers speedwell, its kind of spidery and creepy with these lovely little sprays of flowers.
and here's the cold frame still full of stuff which should have been planted out by now? and I do believe there's a fine crop of dandelions growing up the front of it too.....I am going to an open garden this afternoon so will hopefully have some nice pictures from that to put on through the week.

to see the sea
a recent visit to friends in Dumfriesshire. we are looking over to Auchenlaire Caravan Park, but I forget the name of the viewpoint we are on. the car was parked close to the sea on a rocky beach, I thought briefly about dipping my toes in but too chilly.
there's a couple of little islands there, sure that I have kayaked this area in the past.

snow to mud, cold
I had booked a week off work, just as well as there would have been no getting there. I was meant to travel to visit friends but cancelled with the weather reports... we've re-arranged for a couple of days at the end of the month.
the horses were out in the big field for the snow storm, with big round bales of hay and extra bins filled with water. there was no traveling to them either so they were left to the farm owner to check .
feelings are generally that winter is too long, too cold, and everyone is fed up.
the nights are getting lighter and hopefully it will warm up soon.

the dumbing down and poisoning
I read labels of food when I shop. sometimes having to choose between affordability and nutrition...
large conglomerates of shops leading the market with their products... not food... non food?
lemon curd as an example. homemade is eggs, lemons, sugar. butter.
Asda... a Walmart shop... er... none of those are in it....
and everything, it seems everything, has palm oil in it. bread, biscuits, peanut butter. like biting into blood....
shop local, shop health food stores... better for you but I can't afford it.
very grumpy about this.
to lighten my mood up a bit, the sun is shining and I'm having a lazy day, watching Star Trek Voyager.

sunny but cold
the sun is shining on me and Luna the dog so we're snoozing.... the cats have not come back after the screeching over the laptop..
I've a bad cold so I'm slouching on the sofa with dogs and cats for company... and Sam, the cuddliest one, he nudges you just as you drink your coffee... today he spilled it right over my laptop... oh my.
its taken a lot of drying and 20 minutes of system restore to get it back on... all seems to be working and files are calling up as usual,,, I'm going to leave it on now so that it keeps good and warm and hopefully any residual damp will be heated off. and I will back up files to a store later on too.. just a reminder of how easily things can be lost.
the weather is just winter yuck horrible, snow, that melts into muddy sludge, nice sunshine but freezing temperatures. I'm glad the nights are now showing a noticable difference in lightness.
photograph is of coffee in the bottom of my keepcup that was left in the car.. frozen solid !!

I just watched a tourist video for this town. looks lovely... but in my grumpiness I have this to say,,,
-they do tourist adverts like this for Scotland too, quite different from actually living here, in the cold and the wet. difficult to find decent decent jobs and affordable housing. the violence, not even hidden anymore, the drugs, people seem proud to be involved... children left to fend for themselves... overcrowded prisons.. is there anywhere in the world actually ''nice'' ??-

Abbey and Quince
it was always my dream to have these two girlies... this was the morning Abbey was leaving to go to her retirement. hope to visit her in a week or two. this is the one decent photo from a series of about 20 where they wouldn't stand, moved around, made faces at each other, i had my eyes closed etc... lol
Quince is convinced she can't have her front feet lifted to be picked out... we're working on it... the hoof trimmer is due this weekend so she might not have much done this time. her fronts look like they've been cut too short anyway so they need to recover. Abbeys feet are perfect.

ooops... bought a pony....
I have decided to retire Abbey from riding, she is 17 but has spooked
violently all her life and its getting worse, I sometimes think she
can't see properly but vets cannot give me any clue.
she is returning to the people I bought her from and they are retiring another welsh cob called Glen, 22, so she will be his companion.
and .... ooops... bought another one...
a horse I know from a few years ago, another welsh cob.. I do like them... Quince, she is 12 and we've been out a couple of walks together now so hope to start getting out for some longer rides soon.

March..... like time marches on and on.
a warmish day in Januarys where I let Abbey out without her waterproof rug on, she got good and muddy, stayed in overnight to dry off, she was groomed clean and rug back on to go outside again. I think they like to get good and dirty and its because I like her clean and ridable that I keep the rug on.
Abbey is my little Welsh Cob, we're not up to doing much in bad weather.... Endomondo has us at 16 miles for February and that's more than I would have guessed so not too shabby. even at age 17 she needs to be kept in regular work to behave, we rode out with company on Sunday, then by ourselves yesterday, there was a warmth in the air and she was very chilled after some initial ''monsters'' that we have to pass to leave the yard.
I got a FREE ticket to go to the Parelli Masterclass next weekend to watch!!
er...free ticket... my hotel is costing £140 and petrol costs sharing the drive with someone already going will come to about £60....
so that's my excitement. I put a load of stuff up for sale and have raised £35 towards it , anything helps really.

think all my angels were having a meeting?? there were more on the gravel leading up to the car too. I have a lot of angels, miss all of them
moved some of the snowdrops from my garden to the farm for 'in memory of', this fat leaved snowdrop I think is 'cats whiskers', nice big flower with lots of green inside, they are for Eric, the farm's old dog.

and a wild type snowdrop with narrow silvery leaves, a gift early on in the garden from my friends dad, who has now passed on, so this brings him to memory too. these are over Daisy and Smokey. I am a bit sad Tansy is not near them... but its only a body.. and she'll be remembered with them always, many blessings xx
