time to start seeds

Beans exhausted after supervising my splitting clumps of snowdrops to share some with a friend. they were dug up this morning, bulbs washed and put into damp paper. then transplanted into their new garden in the afternoon. hopefully they will put on a good show next spring
very mild temperatures and a mostly dry day, later in the week its to get back to freezing, and its to be wet most day, hopefully not too windy.
time to start seeds , a tray of Onion Tosca
and a tray of Leek Blue Solaise
in the greenhouse with plastic propagator lids over the top. these veggies can cope with the cold
I've had seeds from MoreVeg before, they always do well, they are in smaller packets which are perfect for the home garden grower, and very economical to buy.

the light was fading and those last photos have a funny tint to them. the streetlamps weren't on yet but it was starting to get dark. the days are noticably longer which pleased me very much. I use a SAD lamp in the mornings to try and combat the winter blues.

''on birds'' REPOSTING THIS OLDER POST FROM 16TH APRIL 2007

I recieved this photograph in an e-mail, its an quail, an very unusual bird to have in your garden! and such a fabulous tree full of spring blossom.

and my garden won't get such exotic visitors, due to the continuos ripping out of hedges its rare to see anything at all, a lot of starlings and thats about it.

I'm a Starling. . . me Darling. a poem by Pam Ayres

We're starlings, the misses, meself and the boys.
We don't go round hoppin', we walks,
We dont go in for this singing all day
And twittering about, we just squawks.

We don't go in for these fashionable clothes
Like old Missel Thrush and his spots,
Me breast isn't red, there's no crest on me head,
We've got sort of, hardwearing . . . dots.

We starlings, the misses, meself and the boys,
We'll eat anything that's about,
Well, anything but that old half coconut,
I can't hold it still. I falls out.

What we'd rather do is wait here for you
To put out some bread for the tits,
And then when we're certain you're there by the curtain,
We flocks down and tears it to bits.

But we starlings, the misses, meself and the boys,
We reckon that we're being got at.
You think for two minutes, them finches and linnets,
You never sees them being shot at.

So the next time you comes out to sprinkle the crumbs out,
And there's starling there, making a noise,
Don't you be so quick to heave a half a brick,
Its the misses, meself and the boys!

''PLEASE EXCUSE THE WEEDS, I'M FEEDING THE BEES''

stunning purple poppy in a friends, potted and very healthy with lots more flowers to bloom on it - this is the first, what a colour! hopefully I can take a seed pod when they're ready.
the garden here has some colour, mostly from ''weeds'', rosebay willow herb, cow parsley, forget-me-nots, daisys, hawkweed - I'm leaving them in situ providing some food for the bees , I should get a sigh that I saw on the internet somewhere, which I have made the title of this post.
''PLEASE EXCUSE THE WEEDS, I'M FEEDING THE BEES''

all my garden tools and equipment went into storage in various friends/relatives garages/sheds. unfortunately not all of it has returned. I am having to borrow a lawn mower to cut the grass, nothing has been strimmed as I've no time to keep running about borrowing things. I've bought lopers and a pruning saw, and just bought a hedge trimmer. Of course,  after two amazingly dry warm days which I spent at work, now its a rainy weekend and there is nothing to be done outside. Three mistreated tomato plants did get potted yesterday..... poor things.

Casper is going outside daily now and not peeing inside... however where he has already done so continues to resist being cleaned and I will have to replace three rooms of carpets which is an expense I could well have done without just now.

re;posting "exotic vines"

"Everyone who got where he is had to begin where he was."
Robert Louis Stevenson

a friend sent this quote to share and a photograph of this exotic Glove Vine of North America, thought to be very hardy but prey to gardeners who pinch things. . . .

going through some old posts and found this from April 2007.... lol. xx

if you go down to the woods today....

friends inspecting a fairly new hive to find the queen bee, it had been noticed that there was not much activity with the bees. I am a good distance away using my zoom lens......
after giving them some smoke, all the hive comes into sections and the combs all lift out seperately.
each section inspected and no queen bee to be seen, there are also very few bees so the thought is that she has left and taken bees with her.
some of the cells have grubs in them so one of them may grow into a new queen bee..... story to be updated then!

goodbye old friend

picture taken at the caravan garden in 2004.May supervises my weeding
my gardening friend May died this morning, she's not been well for a long time. she was a very big source of my gardening knowlege and a big donator of some beautiful plants. she'll be able to watch me weeding from her gardening heaven now. I wrote of her before in this previous post on May's gardens

my bit...

this is a small part of my friends large and neglected garden, there is beech hedge down one side and some established hostas and grasses. all the little plants are cuttings or splits from my plants so this is 'my bit' and I'll be keeping an eye on it. I've used plants that should look after themselves, its a difficult garden, exposed and windy with a very poor clay soil, and no gardener!! hopefully there will be an photo later in the year showing it all filled in.
and Abbey, my reason for neglecting my own garden.....

thoughts on maturing gardens

I often enviously watch garden makeover programmes on television, inspired by their ideas I might try a gew things but am generally deterred by their sheer expenditure. an instant garden? the cost of a designer and about £3000 worth of plants?

not in my or many gardens I know!!

these two photographs show gardens planted by my friend May, the first is just 10 years old the lower one over 35 years. she is obvioulsy an informed and inspired plantswoman, many of the plants in my garden have been gifts from her, cuttings and offshoots from her beautiful and varied plants. occasionally I do some weeding or planting for her and come away with priceless knowledge and armfulls of stuff to plant. and she insists I am doing her a favour?
unfortuately this old garden is gone now, a few of these beautiful mature plants have made their way into my and other lucky peoples gardens.

and if you are looking at a large space for 'conversion' into a fabulous space, remember one plant will grow, and fill a larger area than you imagined! its worth waiting for!!

goodbye Billy

my gardening friend Billy died yesterday. he always likes things done the right way, which is the way his dad did it. at the end of season his greenhouse was always "rededd oot", meaning a good clean. and he would frown at, but still forgive, my ornaments in my greenhouse, his wife says he called it a "girls greenhouse". a marvellous tall man for putting in the glass. he'll be sorely missed.

misty mountains of scotland

typical scottish summer weather!
I was invited to stay with friends on Saturday night near Oban.
this is their veg plot, which I am really impressed with as they constructed it all this year, it is raised 'lazy beds' as their garden soil is little more than a 'raised beach' of compacted earth and more stones than mine!!all laid out to allow acces all along the plot,

also this year they dug out this pond and grew frogs from tadpoles, hopefully to control the slug population and waiting for this lily to flower soon
practising life skills , lighting fire in the wet, for when we run out of oil.
always handy to have a friend to fetch sticks .

Betty's garden

I had a lovely lunch today at Betty's house, home made broccoli soup and garlic bread, yum. A good gardening friend, Betty is very knowlegable and good garden 'do-er'; by which I mean if she sees something in her minds eye she goes out and does it, where I would have another cup of tea and look at it in my minds eye some more. . . .
She has this marvellous chinese style house next to her pond. The pond is in the middle of having its sides made level so it wasn't very photogenic today as it had a large aluminium ladder slap-bang over it.
After our lunch it started with hailstones outside, when they landed in the trough I thought it looked as if she had scattered white stones on the soil.

I have been planting tomato and pepper seeds in the house to sit on widowsills, better germinating in the warm, the greenhouse is still a bit chilly at night although it hasn't been below 0C this week. I have early potato 'Red Duke of York' and maincrop 'Record' ready to go into the other plot, I haven't grown either of these veriety's before. The daffodils are starting to come out in the garden, nice bright yellow to look forward to!
