started spring cleanup

the snow drops are just begining to show themselves. I have some time off work so hope to get the garden tidied and readly to 'go'. also time to put pencil to paper and get the veg beds planned.
last year lacked colour in the flower beds, a combination of bad weather and being busy so I would like to deal with that a bit better this year.

I need to do the same- got a bit done a week ago but am thinking of adding some organic fertiliser to front beds asap. I also picked up some viola plants to fill in empty spaces for the now. love the photo

hopefully the snowdrops will unfurl in a few days and I'll take their photo again.

I've been tidying myself. It's frustrating at this time of year as you want to be able to really get things done but are often defeated by the short daylight hours! I'm glad the days are starting to get noticeably longer and look forward to many long and glorious day pottering around outside.

Is it necessary to 'weed' everything around the plants now coming up? Or is it OK to let some mulch settle naturally? Also, has anyone come across www.ediblelandscaping.co.uk - a lovely lady in Wales is promoting us all having an edible garden and keeping fit and healthy growing our own stuff, no matter how small our garden...

We too are working away here in NW Ireland. Making new beds, cleaning up the old ones and planting seeds. Pretty cold here today though. Good luck with all your tasks.

Jason, I have another week off work to tidy the garden and am being defeated by the weather being to wet. I can do some tidying but far too wet to dig.
Wildside, its lovely when the spring bulbs start to show, like breathign a big sigh of relief after winter..
Gina, my garen had no weeding done at all last year and is a more than a sight for sore eyes... I am clering obvious big stuff, but without even disturbing the soil too much as its too wet to dig. there are some areas I will make super tidy and some I will let overgrow. to much of it lending itself to overgrowing at the moment! yes I've heard of edible landscaping, some of that is covered within permaculture too.
Bridget, its the time of year that just wants to clear away all the 'old' and start everything new and clean. too wet here!!

Snow drops are so lovely. I'm still wondering if they grow here but Halifax is still very much winter bound and spring seems far away. Thanks for posting the lovely picture and happy gardening,

Susan, I have never thought of wether the snowdrop is a worldwide plant or not.....now I'm going to have to find out!

i'm enjoying your scottish spring. we've warmed to a balmy -15C here today. bright sunshine and clear blue skies. i've grown snowdrops in northern ab, so i'm sure they would grow for Susan in Halifax.... i don't think they're native to Canada, though.

When the daffodils pop up, spring is truly underway.
