I have a very sweet tooth. I have been a vegetarian a long time and I've been increasingly worried about the contents of the average, easily available sweetie.
I had a 'list' of things I thought it was okay to eat, and I read labels. I don't know if the recipies have changed or is there a new 'legal directive' on what they have to declare?
A lot of sweeties now seem to have 'Beef Gelatine' or 'Bovine Gelatine' in them.
I did a bit of label reading today and found these lovely sweeties from Sainsbury's, American Hard Gums.
I can eat them. I am building myself a revised list.....

As a non-vegetarian married to a carnivore (as you know), I am very impressed by how long you've been able to keep this up. Happy to hear you can still have your sweets too. Were the homegrown eggs we served you off your list too? As you weren't the only vegetarian at our dinner table, I am wondering if I blundered, thinking I was doing the right thing... Hmm... perhaps you don't have to answer that!
Wildside, I eat eggs, cheese, milk. and I particularly loved your fresh eggs and meeting your happy chooks!
My daughter has been vegetarian for about 15 years. We are traveling to Scotland in June and it seems many restuarants offer vegetarian fare, which is a good thing. We are unfamiliar with some of the Scottish foods so she may be living on fruits, veggies, and bread. She also eats dairy products, she can't make herself go vegan.
Bonnie, if there's a chance of meeting up while you're here that would be lovely. the food here is much as you would find anywhere really.
I have a sweetie jar beside me on my desk here- love the American hard gums too. You can send me all the ones you can't eat by the way ;)wink
My worry is that l eat sweeties in bed at night when l'm reading- after l have brushed my teeth!!
I am dreading my next visit to the dentist- she has a way about her that makes you feel like a naughty school child.
Horizon, I used to work as a Dental Nurse...........no sweeties after brushing!!!
