sweet tooth?

this is my gooseberry crop, variety something with red in the name, I think it looks like a bowl of glass marbles. they've been simmered down, and I add a can of condensed milk and a tub of double cream. gooseberry fool. yum.

I'm always a little bit perplexed about how tell when they are perfectly ripe (not over or under..) I also have a pink variety and a green variety (Poorman's. Very sweet). Also a jostaberry -which is a cross between a gooseberry and a black currant.

GF, strawberrys and cream! are the wild gooseberrys sweet? mine are edible on their own but only just.
Wildside, they would have made a nice picture stil on the bush, but forgot to take one before I picked them!
Tara, these are between ripe and half ripe, the riper they get the darker red they go, but they don't all go at the same time and you risk losing a lot of them to birds and they tend to fall on the ground too. the jostaberry sounds interesting.

Would that variety name be something like Hinomaki red? That is just brilliant! I only had about 6 gooseberries on my bush this year but it is just a young one yet! They are just so divine! Hope you enjoyed them.

Matron, don't think so, the lable was lost a while ago, I've a green bush as well and it had a good crop last year and almost nothing this year.
GF, just add condensed milk. . . .

I have never tasted these berries!
Condensed milk and double cream sounds decadent!

NG, overindulgence, gooseberrys only ripen once a year!

mmm I love gooseberries.

not far from us, in the mountains of Washington state are zillions of Huckleberries!! They taste like a very small, very potent blueberry.
