''on birds'' REPOSTING THIS OLDER POST FROM 16TH APRIL 2007

I recieved this photograph in an e-mail, its an quail, an very unusual bird to have in your garden! and such a fabulous tree full of spring blossom.

and my garden won't get such exotic visitors, due to the continuos ripping out of hedges its rare to see anything at all, a lot of starlings and thats about it.

I'm a Starling. . . me Darling. a poem by Pam Ayres

We're starlings, the misses, meself and the boys.
We don't go round hoppin', we walks,
We dont go in for this singing all day
And twittering about, we just squawks.

We don't go in for these fashionable clothes
Like old Missel Thrush and his spots,
Me breast isn't red, there's no crest on me head,
We've got sort of, hardwearing . . . dots.

We starlings, the misses, meself and the boys,
We'll eat anything that's about,
Well, anything but that old half coconut,
I can't hold it still. I falls out.

What we'd rather do is wait here for you
To put out some bread for the tits,
And then when we're certain you're there by the curtain,
We flocks down and tears it to bits.

But we starlings, the misses, meself and the boys,
We reckon that we're being got at.
You think for two minutes, them finches and linnets,
You never sees them being shot at.

So the next time you comes out to sprinkle the crumbs out,
And there's starling there, making a noise,
Don't you be so quick to heave a half a brick,
Its the misses, meself and the boys!

we have occasional visits from 'the misses, meself, and the boys' here, as well. delightful poem. and we spot the odd quail here, especially in the more southerly part of the province. i've also come across hungarian partridge, that got loose from someone's domestic flock, and survived in the wild. the yard i'm moving away from is popular with the birds, as it's well treed and i leave sunflowers and other seed bearing treats standing for them through the winter. the 'new' has quite a few shrubs as well, so i'm hopeful that i'll be serenaded with birdsong all summer.

Grannyfiddler, I love watching birds come to the feeders, unfortunatly so do the cats. . .
David, I get lots of them in the garden, and they line up along the ridges of the house oposite.

Beautiful picture, Claire, and I love the poem... what a hoot. I get a lot of wild birds in my yard. They come to eat with my chooks.

Claire, I like your post from the past. Seems so familiar that I keep wondering if that just might be my bird! As I have a recollection of once seeing a quail up a fruit tree in my yard -- which is an unusual place for them to be as they are normally ground dwelling birds. Well, admittedly, I've plain forgotten as with lots other. But... I once did live on Starling (Street), darling! I miss saying that -- and I miss your news. Hope it is going well for you right now.

Wildside, it must be your photograph that you sent me in an email,
there are some quail at the farm, three who flutter about together. they usually fly out of the long grass or out from the bottom of the hedge and startle Quince as we ride past.
not much happening here, weather is getting colder and wetter.

a couple of handfuls of ripe cherry tomatoes, a couple of handfuls of green. poor neglected plants, I think they did very well.

Mine were pretty neglected too and just grew out of control... Yesterday I pulled most of them up and wound up with 3 large boxes full -- all from self-saved seed, so good news -- free but for lack of space & hassle. So now to find space inside to lay them out and ripen! I still haven't found a way I like to eat them green, but green they be.

Thank you for the card yesterday.
