mushroom harvest

here's the mushroom crop from the box. acording to the instructions if I cover the surface lightly with fresh compost, make sure its damp, bring it into the warm for a few days again then that may bring on some more.

  2. Yay for homegrown mushrooms! Love 'em -- so yummy. Way to go, Claire!

But is that all the box generated?

(Wondering because mushroom kits here are expensive [or seem so to me; I keep lusting after them!]... And mushrooms in stores are locally grown [on a farm less than 10 miles away], so readily available.)

  3. you didn't tell us what you plan to do with those beauties....? salad? stir-fry? are they big enough to stuff? now you've got me thinking.... my cellar might be a good place to try one of those kits.

  5. I'm so envious! Mine came to nothing. Did you buy one of those polystyrene boxes with the spawn in a bag? or did you buy the spawn in a seed packet? either way, well done.

  7. Michael, they were very tasty, it looks very cold in you picture!
Wildside, there were a few more than that, not many though. I don't know how much the kit cost as it was a present. its meant to produce another flush if treated properly.
Grannyfiddler, they became part of an omlette, with some homegrown onions too.
    Jim, exactly!
Matron, they are in a polystyrene box and everything needed was supplied. glad it worked.
Lilymarlene, it was fun to try, as they're meant to be expensive I'm not sure I would do it again.

  8. If you leave a few of the mushrooms in the box, might they drop spores & "reseed" themselves?

oh, hmm, just looked at a mushroom growing site and I guess it's more complicated than that.

    Never mind!

    Happy 2008!
